Toyota MR2 Spyder SMT Wiring Harness Conversion

OK, So why is a wiring guide part of a carbon fiber and shift boot company? This brand doesn’t just represent products. It represents all things that I am passionate about especially Cars. The MR2 is really the chassis that got me hooked. I have so many tips and tricks and hacks for this car after doing over 40+ engine swaps and builds for them. This will help provide a resource that people could use.

The Mr2 came with a SMT (Sequential Manual Transmission option, which is what my daughter has. It’s basically a manual transmission that automatically controlled without a clutch. Not a DCT. It’s meh…. It alright but it’s usually a matter of time until the a part of the system fails and fixing that part is very expensive. I’ve done several SMT to Manual swaps and after the first one I doubled my labor price because it’s tedious.

This hack really allows you to use the existing SMT wiring harness, adapt it so that you can use it for the Manual Transmission conversion. The two systems you need to wire in are the TPS and IAC. Throttle Position sensor and Idle air control. The SMT has extra wires and the plugs are different so you will need to source these two plugs. I’ll make a video when I have free time, which never happens so please don’t hold your breath, that shows the install so it’s dummy proof. You can also purchase these plugs relatively cheap from Toyota. All i need to get are the plug numbers.

This is option can save hundreds of dollars. Last time I checked it was about 300 for a manual harness.

The picture is the wiring Diagram, and I’ll link the video for the install tutorial soon. I am actually going to do it because the GROKU Build needs the harness asap. 1zz fully built turbo green car.

What’s sad is that this information isn’t really documented. I know a big company offers instructions but is holding that information in a vault. I get it. they make money repairing SMT’s and selling manual conversions.  I’m posting this because I want to help those people who don’t have crazy budgets to build cars.  Here you go my friend.

One step at at time. The dream I have for this company is so huge. I just heard a quote that says, “Chase a dream so big, it’s bound to fail without divine intervention.”
